We have received a few phone calls from customers telling us about recent calls they have received from an unkown security company with sales techniques that should set off alarm bells (pun intended).
The company seems to be based out of the US, or at least that is where the call centre seems to be from based on the caller ID. The telltale statement being made that should alert homeowners is that “the company has been informed by the FBI that there have been a lot of break-ins in your area and that you should have an alarm system installed”. We don’t tend to hear warnings from the FBI here in Canada.
Price’s Alarms always takes the same stance in these types of situations. Know who you are talking to, know what there reputation is, take some time to do some research and never make a buying decision over the phone following a phone solicitation. The BBB warns people over and over to beware of the phone solicitor as many scams are telephone initiated that are based outside of Canada and are difficult to monitor or shutdown.
Further on in the telphone conversation, the company offers you a free security system installed at no-charge in exchange for placing the company sign in your front yard. While this may sound pretty good, it is a sales tactic used by many companies that sell alarm systems to grab your attention and interest. The underlying details reveal inadequate security levels, contract terms, monthly charges and more – so not quite as free as you expected – but why would good quality security be available for free anyway? When it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
